Iowa Cubs News Release
Memphis, TN - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jermaine Curtis lined a single to centerfield to drive in Jamie Romak and give the Memphis Redbirds (10-6) a 1-0 walk-off win over the Iowa Cubs (5-11) at Auto Zone Park this afternoon. The Redbirds lead this series 2-0 and the Cubs fall to 1-9 on the road this year.
Both starters were outstanding today as Redbirds' lefty John Gast blanked the Cubs for 6.2 innings and struck out six. The Cubs scattered four hits, all singles, against Gast who has not allowed a run in 24.2 innings this season. He has set a Memphis franchise record with 30.2 consecutive scoreless innings going back to last season.
Cubs' starter Drew Carpenter was also on top of his game. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning when Brock Peterson dropped a check-swing single into left-center. Carpenter allowed just two hits, walked five, and struck out five in 5.2 innings. He came out of the game with two on and in the sixth, but Hisanori Takahashi got Greg Garcia to popout in foul territory to end threat. Takahashi also pitched the seventh and was perfect in his Iowa debut.
Eric Fornataro finished the seventh for Gast and worked through the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Brian Bogusevic drew a two-out walk from Jorge Rondon and J.C. Boscan reached on an infield single, but Logan Watkins was called out on strikes on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat.
Yoanner Negrin set the Redbirds down in order in the bottom of the eighth and came back out for the ninth with a streak of 10.2 scoreless innings to begin the season. Romak led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Jackson. After an intentional walk to Justin Christian, Rob Johnson struck out for the second out of the inning. Curtis was next and lined a 1-1 pitch for the game-winning hit. Today was the Cubs' first game this season decided in either team's final at-bat.
Negrin (0-1) suffers the loss while Rondon (1-0) picks up the win. Ryan Sweeney and Bogusevic each had a hit for the Cubs, extending their hitting streaks to eight and seven, respectively.
The Cubs and Redbirds continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05. LH Brooks Raley (1-2, 3.18) will start for the Cubs against RH Seth Maness (2-1, 3.32) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
