Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - For the second straight game, the Fresno Grizzlies could not complete a comeback attempt as they lost to the Tucson Padres 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Chukchansi Park.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Brett Pill laced a two-out triple into the right field corner that drove in two runs and narrowed the deficit to 5-4. Roger Kieschnick struck out, however, with Pill on third to end the game. The Grizzlies went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.
The Padres did not fare much better with runners in scoring position, though. Tucson was 1-for-7 with runners on second or third and stranded 11 runners.
Home runs, however, took care much of the work needed by the Tucson offense. Dean Anna hit a pair of home runs to generate most of the offensive output. The shortstop hit a two-run shot out of the ballpark in the second inning to make it 2-0 Padres. He later hit a home run on the back end of back-to-back Tucson home runs. Jonathan Galvez preceded Anna with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning.
Two of the three Tucson home runs were surrendered by Fresno starting pitcher Shane Loux. The right-hander allowed four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked three and had no strikeouts in the losing decision.
Galvez's fifth inning homer chased Loux from the game as the Grizzlies brought in Mitch Lively in relief. Lively allowed Anna's home run - the first batter he faced - but the right-hander settled in and did not allow any more runs in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
Juan Ciriaco broke out of a 0-for-8 stretch with an RBI double to drive in Pill in the bottom of the second inning. It was Ciriaco's first RBI of the season.
Pill added a Fresno run in the bottom of the third inning that tied the game at 2-2. Pill singled with a line drive to center field that drove in Juan Perez. Perez reached base with a two-out single.
Pill finished the game with three hits and three RBI. Jurica also had three hits for the Grizzlies, all singles, after he entered the game as part of a double switch in the fifth inning.
Steve Edlefsen and Brett Bochy each contributed shutout appearances from the bullpen. Edlefsen threw two innings while Bochy threw a perfect ninth inning.
Tim Stauffer, who allowed two runs over five innings, earned the win for Tucson. Brad Boxberger tallied the save for the second consecutive game.
Anna finished the game with three hits and drove in three runs for Tucson.
The Grizzlies and Padres will meet for game three of the series on Monday at 7:05 pm. Left-hander Michael Kickham, looking for his first career Triple-A win, will face Tucson's right-handed pitcher Sean O'Sullivan.
