Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva IL - The Kane County Cougars snapped a brief two-game losing streak on Monday night at Elfstrom Stadium, beating the Burlington Bees 6-3 in front of 2,385 fans. Third baseman Jeff Baisley's first hit as a Cougar was a two-run, ground-rule double during a fifth-inning rally, which set up five innings of great relief from the Kane County bullpen.

The Bees scored in the opening frame against Cougars starter Jason Ray, but Jose Pineda's double in the fourth off Bees starter Carlos Rosa scored Jeff Bieker for an even 1-1 count. Burlington added a run in the third and fourth innings to make it 3-1, forcing the Cougars to rally in the last of the fifth.

Mike Massaro and Nick Blasi singled, and Raul Padron moved them along with a sacrifice bunt, setting up Baisley's two-run double that bounced over the fence. Frank Martinez drove in Baisley for a 4-3 game and later scampered home on a passed ball. Blasi plated the final Cougar tally in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Ray lasted four innings and gave up three runs - two earned - on five hits while walking three and striking out four. The Bees never had a base runner after Valentino Arce got hit by a pitch with two outs in the sixth. Joe Piekarz (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings to record the win, John Herrera tossed a perfect eighth and Steve Sharpe notched his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth. Rosa (0-1) took the loss for Burlington.

The Cougars (3-2) and Bees (2-3) continue the three-game series on Tuesday night at 6 CDT, as Trey Shields (1-0, 4.50) opposes Rayner Oliveros (0-0, 0.00).
