West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - Over the first four games of the season, the Whitecaps put up at least nine hits in every contest. But on Tuesday, the bats cooled and West Michigan suffered a narrow defeat, 4-3 in South Bend.

West Michigan grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks in large part to a two-run error. Mark Haske's ground ball caromed off shortstop Pedro Ciriaco and into centerfield, allowed both Mike Holliman and Cameron Maybin to score.

But in the bottom of the inning, the Silver Hawks began their rally. Ciriaco led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

South Bend tied the game in the third inning with two runs. The second came on a double by Greg Thomson.

Ricardo Cruz singled to collect his first hit of the season and drive in the go-ahead in the bottom of the fourth and make the score, 4-3.

Will Rhymes went 3-for-4 for West Michigan. Matt Rusch suffered the loss, despite allowing just one run on two hits in three innings of relief with five strikeouts.

In his first start for the Whitecaps, Burke Badenhop gave up three runs on five hits in just three innings on the hill.

The Last of Five: West Michigan concludes its road trip on Wednesday in South Bend. LHP Luke French (0-0, 4.50) will be on the mound for the Whitecaps against Silver Hawks RHP Anthony Cupps (0-0, 20.25). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The Whitecaps Pre Game Show begins at 6:20 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL, the Whitecaps Radio Network and at wbbl.com.
