Lansing goes yard twice picking up 12 hits in series opening win over Dayton
Dayton, OH - The Lansing Lugnuts (4-1) made sure to pack the hitting shoes as the team departed Michigan for Fifth Third Field on Monday morning. Lansing rapped out a dozen hits scoring 10 runs on route to a series opening 10-1 win over the Dayton Dragons (1-4) in front of 7,664 Monday night.
The Lugnuts, who took three of four games from Southwest Michigan over the weekend without the benefit of a home run, ended that quickly with two long balls in the first two innings off Dayton starter Johnny Cueto (LP, 0-1). Cory Patton hit a solo shot in the first inning to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Josh Bell got in the act in the top of the second with a two run shot off Cueto and the Lansing lead was 3-0 after two.
The visitors picked up two more in the third off Cueto on Patton's second RBI of the game, a run scoring single. David Hicks plated the fifth Lugnut run of the night and his first of three batted in on a fielder choice to put the visitors up 5-0. Cueto managed a one, two, three inning in the fourth, his final frame of the night. The right hander struck out six in his 4.0 innings of work, giving up five earned runs on five hits with two hit batsman.
A.J. Wideman (ND) pitched 3.0 innings in the starting role for Lansing, giving up the lone Dragons run in the home half of the third. Bobby Mosby picked up his first multi-hit game of the season with a double off Wideman in the second and an RBI single in the third that scored Jay Bruce to get Dayton on the board at 5-1.
Lansing added a pair of runs in the fifth inning off Terrell Young (ND), to run the score to 7-1, on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Hicks. The Lugnuts sent eight men to the plate in the seventh against German Melendez (ND), as Brian Petway knocked home two runs with a double to right center. Hicks picked up his third RBI of the night on a single to left that scored Petway from second to close out the scoring at 10-1.
The Lugnut bullpen was sharp as three pitchers combined to shutout the Dragons over the final six innings of the night. Billy Carnline (WP, 1-0) allowed just one hit while striking out six in his 3.0 innings of work to pick up the win. Scott Roy (ND) added 2.0 innings of two hit, no run relief and Yesson Beroa (ND) struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win.
