Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
BELOIT, WI -- The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got timely hitting and their pitchers got big outs when they were needed for a 7-2 win over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on Monday night. Casey Craig and JB Tucker each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Rattler attack. Jose Escalona won his Midwest League debut with five solid innings.
Craig got the Rattlers (3-2) on the board with an RBI double into the right field corner in the top of the second inning. Alex Gary's sacrifice fly to the track in left field drove in Craig to put Wisconsin in front 2-0.
Ron Garth added a sac fly of his own in the top of the third inning for a 3-0 advantage. Craig got back into the RBI act with a ground out that scored a runner from third to make it a 4-0 score.
Beloit (3-2) got going against Escalona in the bottom of the fifth. Tarrence Patterson reached on a single and Steve Tolleson drew a walk. Drew Thompson followed with a single to right and Patterson scored. Escalona got an infield grounder for the first out of the inning, but Thompson and Tolleson were on second and third with only one out. Escalona struck out Eric Lis and Henry Sanchez to end the inning.
Wisconsin added an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning. Robby Hudson drew a one out walk against Snapper relief pitcher Alex Smit. Smit threw wildly on a pick off to first and Hudson hustled around to third base. After Smit walked Garth, Danny Vais entered the game as the third Beloit pitcher. Vais' second pitch bounced away from Beloit catcher Caleb Moore and Hudson scored on the wild pitch for a 5-1 Rattler lead.
The Snappers missed another opportunity in the bottom of the seventh inning. They loaded the bases with one out against Wisconsin reliever Harold Williams. Williams struck out Lis for the second out. Joe Woerman relieved Williams and got Sanchez to take a 3-2 for strike three to end the inning.
JB Tucker gave Wisconsin a 7-1 lead with a two-run double down the left field line in the top of the eighth inning.
Woerman worked a 1-2-3 eighth, but needed help in the ninth. The Snappers loaded the bases with no outs in their final at bat. Edgar Guaramato relieved Woerman and his first pitch to Paul Kelly was turned into a 6-4-3 double play. A run scored on the double play to cut the Rattler lead to 7-2. Guaramato ended the game by getting Lis to fly out to right.
Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. Jason Snyder (1-0, 1.80) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kyle Waldrop (1-0, 0.00) is slated to start for the Snappers. Game time is 6:30pm.
