Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI -- Beloit Snapper first baseman Eric Lis hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the twelfth inning to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 11-10 at Pohlman Field on Tuesday night. Lis' game winner overshadowed a pair of homers by Rattler catcher JB Tucker, who hit a pair of home runs, one in the ninth for a 10-9 lead and the other in the top of the twelfth for an 11-10 lead. Each team used six pitchers and each team also committed five errors in the game.
Rattler lead off batter Ron Garth started the game by drilling a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for his first home run of the season and a 1-0 Wisconsin advantage.
The Snappers (4-2) evened the game up with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Paul Kelly reached on a bad hop single with two outs. Kelly stole second to get into scoring position. Kelly scored the tying run when Luis Valbuena could not handle a ground ball off the bat of Lis.
The Rattlers (3-3) retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning. A botched double play ball allowed Valbuena to reach second with two outs. Casey Craig, the next hitter for Wisconsin, delivered a single into right and Valbuena raced home with the go ahead run.
Beloit edged in front on a two-run double by Allan De San Miguel in the bottom of the fourth inning. A three-run double by Dwayne White in the bottom of the fifth inning put Beloit in front 6-2.
Then, the Rattlers took advantage of a lot of Beloit miscues in the top of the sixth.
Mike Saunders started the inning with a bunt single. One out later, Jeff Flaig was hit by a pitch. Jose Lugo relieved Beloit starting pitcher Kyle Waldrop and promptly gave up a double to Luis Valbuena that scored Saunders and sent Flaig to third. Lugo walked Craig to load the bases. Eddy Hernandez drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in a run, move the Rattlers to within 6-4, and chase Lugo from the game.
Beloit reliever Danny Powers entered the game and walked Jeff Dominguez on a 3-2 pitch to force in another run. Then, one of the weirdest plays in the history of baseball happened at Pohlman Field. (That may be an overstatement)
Garth sent what should have been an inning ending double play ball to short. However, Yancarlos Ortiz bobbled the ball for an error. He flipped late to second base. Drew Thompson thought he had time to get Garth at first, but threw wildly to first for another error. Hernandez was sprinting for the plate and first baseman Eric Lis threw wildly to the plate allowing Garth to wind up at second and Dominguez to take third. Three errors on one play allowed the Rattlers to score two runs and take a 7-6 lead.
Chao Kuan Wu gave Wisconsin an 8-6 lead with a routine sacrifice fly to left.
Caleb Moore's pinch-hit, two-run single off Nick Allen in the bottom of the eighth tied the game 8-8.
Tucker was at the plate with one out in the top of the ninth inning and sent a high fly ball to straight-away center. Patterson drifted back as the ball carried, carried, and carried some more. Patterson leapt at the wall, but could not make the catch and Tucker's first home run of the year put Wisconsin in front 9-8.
But, Beloit rallied in the ninth. Edgar Guaramato hit Edward Ovalle to start the ninth. That was the fifth hit batsman of the night by Timber Rattler pitching. A wild pitch moved Ovalle to second and a walk to White put the winning run on base.
De San Miguel was called on to bunt the runners over, but bunted right back to Guaramato. The Rattler pitcher tried for the force at third, but threw wildly allowing Ovalle to score the tying run, White to take third, and De San Miguel to reach second. An intentional walk to Eli Tintor loaded the bases. But, Guaramato got out of the inning with a fielder's choice, a foul pop out, and another fielder's choice to send the early season epic to extra innings.
Beloit put the winning run on base to start the tenth and eleventh innings, but could not score.
Tucker was the first batter of the twelfth inning and just got a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a 10-9 Rattler lead.
Ruben Flores came on to try and close out the Snappers in the bottom of the twelfth, but gave up an infield single to Kelly. Lis ended the marathon with a blast off the light tower in right center field.
The final game of the three game series is set for Wednesday night. Justin Thomas (0-1, 0.00) gets the starting pitching assignment for the Rattlers. Beloit will send Brian Duensing (0-0, 0.00) to the mound. Game time at Pohlman Field is 6:30pm.
