Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
April 11, 2006 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels addressed several concerns in their 6-0 defeat of the Peoria Chiefs in front of 891 fans Tuesday evening. After struggling both at the plate and coming out of the bullpen in several of their previous games the Kernels smacked 11 hits and received three innings of one-hit relief as they improved to 2-4 on the young season and picked up their first win at Veterans Memorial Stadium.Starting pitcher Tommy Mendoza made up for an inauspicious outing in the season opener by retiring the first nine batters he faced. The 18-year-old right-hander tossed six innings of four-hit ball at the Chiefs to improve to 1-1.Daniel Hawkins hurled the final three frames and didn't surrender a base hit until Dylan Johnston roped a single to center with one gone in the ninth. Hawkins' three shutout innings earned both him and the Kernels their first save of the year.Back-to-back singles by Hainley Statia and Patrick Reilly in the first inning led to the only run the Kernels would need to win the game. With Statia on third and Reilly at first, Mark Trumbo hit a bounding ball to third where Brandon Taylor's only play was to go to first, but Taylor's throw bounced in front of Ryan Norwood and Trumbo was safe. Chiefs starter Donald Veal pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs while walking three and collecting seven strikeouts. The left-hander's record fell to 0-2.The Kernels continued to put runs on the board later in the game with pairs in the sixth and eighth and a single one in the seventh.Travis Schlichting belted the first home run of the season for Cedar Rapids in the sixth with a two-run blast to left.
