Pitchers Rule the Day in Dayton

Dayton, Ohio - Travis Wood tossed five innings while striking out nine batters as the Dayton Dragons upended the Lansing Lugnuts 2-1 at Fifth Third Field Tuesday night. The 19-year old prospect was stellar as he worked his changeup effectively tthroughout the strike zone against the Lugnuts.

The Dragons took the lead in the fifth inning when Eric Eymann hit a laser over the left field wall off of Lugnuts starter Chi-Hung Cehng to make the score 1-0. His homer was the first that the Lugnuts pitching staff has given up all season.

Dayton (2-4) extended its lead later in the frame when Paul Janish singled home Gerardo Cabrera to make the score 2-0. The Dragons then loaded the bases, but Lugnuts' reliever Po-Hsuan Keng got out of the jam by striking out Greg Tatum. Keng has not allowed a run in 7 2/3 innings this season out of the bullpen.

Lansing (4-2) fought back in the eighth inning when Jacob Butler launched his first home run of the season over the center field wall to make it 2-1. However, Zach Stott would come in and nail down the win for the Dragons and pick up his second save in the process.

Wood (1-0) got the win for Dayton while Chi-Hung Cheng (1-1) took the loss for the Lugnuts after throwing 4 1/3 innings and giving up seven hits while allowing two runs.

The Lugnuts and Dragons will play the rubber game of the series on Wednesday at Fifth Third Field. Kristian Bell (1-0) will start for Lansing, while Carlos Fisher (0-0) takes the bump for Dayton. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
