Bees drop series opener to Cougars
April 11, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
The Kane County Cougars (3-2) scored four runs in the fifth inning to take their first lead on their way to a 6-3 victory over the Burlington Bees (2-3) in the first of a three-game series at Elfstrom Stadium tonight. The rally ruined the return of Bees' starter Carlos Rosa who missed all of last season after arm surgery.
The Bees got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Valentino Arce singled, Chris McConnell walked, a passed ball moved Arce to third, and Mario Lisson drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the second. Rosa issued a leadoff walk to Jeff Bieker and Jose Pineda drove him in with a double to deep center.
The Bees took the lead back against Cougars' starter Jason Ray with a two-out rally in the third. JP Lowen singled, moved to second on a walk to Jeff Howell, and scored on a single by Carlos Arroyo. The Bees added another run in the fourth. Jose Duarte walked, stole second, moved to third on a bunt single by Ethien Santana and scored on a sacrifice fly by Arce. Santana finished with three hits, the most in a game by a Bees' player this year.
In the deciding fifth, Mike Massaro led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a base hit by Nick Blasi. Raul Padron moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt setting up Jeff Baisley's two-run ground rule double that tied the game at three and chased Rosa (0-1) from the contest. Cody Harkcom came in for his Bees' debut and was greeted by a single from Frank Martinez that drove in Baisley to give the Cougars their first lead at 4-3. Martinez would score on a passed ball later in the inning to complete the rally. The Cougars added another unearned run against Harkcom in the sixth when Steve Kleen reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blasi. Harkcom worked a scoreless seventh and Adam Kalkhof finished with a scoreless eighth.
The Bees couldn't break through against the Cougars' bullpen. Lefty Joe Piekarz (1-0) took over for Ray in the fifth and pitched three scoreless innings for the win. The Bees rallied to load the bases with two outs in the sixth, but McConnell flew out to end the inning. The Bees wouldn't get another baserunner as John Herrera and Steve Sharpe finished with a perfect inning apiece. Sharpe earned his third save of the year.
The Bees and Cougars continue this series tomorrow night at 6:00 at Elfstrom Stadium. RH Rayner Oliveros will make his first start of the year for the Bees against RH Trey Shields (1-0, 4.50) for the Cougars. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
