SilverHawks Cruz to win
April 11, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - It had to enter the mind of Ricardo Cruz. He had to wonder when he was going to collect his first hit in the Midwest League. For Cruz, it may have not come when he wanted it, but it came at the right time. The middle infielder's base hit in the bottom of the fourth broke a 3-3 tie and helped the Silver Hawks to a 4-3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps.
Like the previous night, the Whitecaps opened the scoring early. In the first frame, Will Rhymes singled to left field and advanced to second when Mike Hollimon walked. Cameron Maybin singled to the mound, moving Rhymes and Hollimon up 90 feet. Matt Joyce's groundout plated Rhymes to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead. Mark Haske reached on a fielding error by Hawks shortstop Pedro Ciriaco allowing Hollimon and Maybin to score and extending the West Michigan lead to 3-0.
The Hawks pulled within two runs in the bottom of the inning when Pedro Ciriaco singled to center, moved around to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on a passed ball charged to Whitecaps backstop Dusty Ryan.
The Hawks tied the game in the home half of the third inning. Pedro Ciriaco singled ten feet away from home plate and made it to third base when Leyson Septimo doubled to center field. Trey Hendricks ground out plated Ciriaco and advanced Septimo to third, with Septimo scoring on a two out double to left field by Greg Thomson to even the game at three
The Hawks grabbed the lead for good in the fourth when Ricardo Cruz, who had not picked up a hit in 11 at-bats on the year, singled home Frank Curreri, who reached on a base hit and moved into scoring position with a stolen base.
The Hawks and Whitecaps complete their series Wednesday night at the Cove. It will be By One Get One tickets with a Pepsi proof of purchase, DTSB and Chamber night with $1 tickets and South Bend Tribune 5 FOR $5 night, with vouchers good for $1 reserved and $3 box seats.
