Admirals Take Down Rockford
February 6, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI - The Milwaukee Admirals were able to squeeze past the Rockford IceHogs Friday night due to three unanswered goals in the third period to give them a 4-1 win at Bradley Center.
After Cody Franson made the game even at 1-1 in the second period with a slapshot from the point on the power-play, it looked as if the game was going to be a bit closer than it was in the end, especially due to the accumulation of 11 penalties in the game.
"One of the reasons I thought we weren't as good in the first 40 minutes is because we spent most of the time in the penalty box," explained Admirals Head Coach Lane Lambert.
Despite their multiple penalties, they saw some skill shine through in the third.
It was Geoff Peters who gave the Ads the game winning goal at 4:30 of the final period. Forward Ryan Maki drove down the rightwing side of the offensive zone and was crushed by a Rockford defenseman. However, Maki got a shot off and Rockford goalie Antti Niemi made a leg save, but the puck slid right to the tape of Geoff Peters who quickly snapped in a forehand into an open net for his third goal of the season.
They secured the lead when, once again, Ryan Maki, shoved one home at 6:57 of the third to make the game 3-1.
Mike Santorelli put the game away for the Admirals when he scored on a pretty play with just under five minutes to go.
During a power-play, Franson fired a shot that sailed wide of the net, but the rebound went right to Cal O'Reilly, who found Santorelli in front of the net. Rather than blast one by Rockford's netminder Antti Niemi, he decided to throw it in backhanded over the IceHog goalie's shoulder. It was Santorelli's 15th tally of the season.
The Admirals proved once again that they can handle a bit of pressure when they're down and off their game.
"It was very good of our team to come out and step up the play in the third period to put a little separation between us and a team that I think right now is playing very good," noted Lambert.
Franson, Santorelli, and Maki all notched a goal and an assist in the win, and Cal O'Reilly got two assists for his 40th and 41st helpers of the season.
Goaltender Drew MacIntyre proved his worth and showed why your goaltender can be your best penalty killer, as he stopped 26 of the 27 attempts, and helped the Ads go eight-for-eight on the PK.
After a road game tomorrow in Chicago, the Admirals return home to the Bradley Center for a 4:00 pm matinee against Peoria. Fans can purchase tickets by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Groups of ten or more people receive a minimum of $2 off of each ticket.
