Peoria Rivermen News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (February 6, 2009) - The Peoria Rivermen scored twice in the final five minutes of the third period to turn the game around and beat the Quad City Flames 3-2 on Friday night at the iWireless Center. Steve Regier's goal was his fifth game-winner of the season and came with just 1:29 left in regulation. He has six goals in as many games against the Flames this year.

Trailing 2-1 following a Kyle Greentree power-play goal at 11:35 of the third, the Rivermen turned the momentum and started pressuring goaltender Leland Irving. After a flurry of chances for Jonathan Filewich and Charles Linglet at the goal-mouth, the puck bounced onto the stick of Nicholas Drazenovic. He fluttered a shot over the shoulder of Irving to tie the game at 2-2 with only 4:53 to go.

Regier's goal came directly off a turnover as he intercepted a pass just inside the Flames' blue line. He skated in a few steps and ripped a slap shot through the legs of Irving and into the back of the net. The winger now has five goals in his last five games and leads the team with 17.

The two teams traded goals in the first period and then went scoreless over the next 35 minutes. Eric Neilson accounted for the games' first goal at 12:47 of the first period. Cam Paddock raced in along the wall and chipped a pass to Nielson walking down the slot all alone. Irving slowed down Nielson's initial shot but he was able gather his own rebound behind Irving in the crease. It was the third goal of the season for Nielson and second against the Flames.

A power play for Quad City allowed them to tie the game quickly. At 14:27 a shot from the point rolled right onto the stick of Jamie Lundmark who pushed it past Ben Bishop for his 14th of the year. The Flames second goal occurred on a 5-on-3 advantage that only lasted 11 seconds. Quad City finished 2-for-7 on the power play while the Rivermen failed to score on their three chances.

Friday was the first meeting between the Rivermen and the Flames since Dec. 6 and Peoria has posted a 5-1-0 record against Quad City this season. Their next game is scheduled for Feb. 22 at Carver Arena. The win pushed the Rivermen into a tie, with Houston, for fifth place and leaves them only two points back of third place Iowa in the West Division standings.

The three-game road trip continues on Sunday when the Rivermen take on the first-place Milwaukee Admirals. The sixth meeting of the season between these rivals will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the radio broadcast will be available on Hippie 101.1 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
