Norfolk Admirals News Release

Shawn Thornton scored twice, including the game-winner in the third period, as the Admirals defeated the Springfield Falcons 5-2.

The first period saw one goal for both teams in the middle of the frame. The Admirals took the lead at 8:13 when Carl Corazzini picked up a blocked Brian Lee shot and beat Springfield goalie Jonathan Boutin blocker side high. Springfield pulled even with a Zdenek Blatny power play tally at 10:21. The teams skated to the locker room tied at a goal apiece after twenty minutes.

Blatny gave the visitors the lead 4:35 into the second stanza with a wrister from the high slot. Shawn Thornton tied the game with 2:16 left in the period, as he deflected a Danny Eberly shot for a five-on-three goal. Heading into the final frame, the Admirals and Falcons were tied 2-2.

Thornton scored his second goal of the game just 31 seconds into the third period on a quick-developing two-on-one with Martin St. Pierre. St. Pierre waited to clear a sliding defender before sending a pass across the slot to a waiting Thornton at the edge of the left face-off circle. Thornton buried a wrist shot past Boutin. Quintin Laing provided an insurance penalty shot goal after being hooked down on a shorthanded breakaway at the 13:16 mark. Laing sent a heavy wrist shot through the pads of Boutin to give the home team a 4-2 lead. An empty-net tally by St. Pierre rounded out scoring, as the Admirals prevailed 5-2.

Corey Crawford stopped 26 of 28 shots en route to the victory. Jonathan Boutin saved 36 of 40 Admirals' shots and was saddled with the loss.

Norfolk was 1-6 on the power play while Springfield 1-4.
