Abbotsford Heat News Release
Winnipeg, MB - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights got 33 saves from Brent Krahn and earned their 20th win of the season, 4-1 over the Manitoba Moose on Friday night at the MTS Center. The game was the first of two between the two teams this weekend.
The Knights were outshot 18-2 in the first period but escaped with the game scoreless. Krahn kept it that way, making his toughest saves on two chances from point blank range when Josh Green broke in off a turnover.
The tie was broken early in the second period. Omaha's Craig MacDonald carried the puck down the right wing, curled the net and tucked a pass in front to Dave Moss. He tapped the puck past goalie Wade Flaherty for his eleventh goal of the year.
Later in the period, Justin Taylor was whistled for a five-minute high sticking penalty and just 57 seconds later, Warren Peters was flagged for tripping. That gave the Moose a full two minute two-man advantage. The Knights held the Moose at bay and took advantage as Peters came out of the box. Zenith Komarniski sent him away on a breakaway, and he beat Flaherty with a backhander to put the Knights up 2-0. It was the Knights' sixth shorthanded goal of the year.
The Moose finally made good on the five minute penalty with 12 seconds remaining. Jason Jaffray curled a shot past Krahn to make it 2-1 just 1:39 into the third period.
But the Knights would get their own five-minute powerplay when Jimmy Roy was sent off for high sticking. Prestin Ryan then got a minor penalty 40 seconds later, giving the Knights a two-man advantage for two minutes. It didn't take that long for the Knights to score. Mark Giordano sent a spinning backhander past Flaherty to make it 3-1 at 8:20 of the period.
Lynn Loyns added an empty net shorthanded tally with about a minute left to give the Knights the 4-1 win. Krahn earned his 13th win of the year while Peters finished with the game-winning goal and an assist.
The Knights are now 20-23-2-7. They'll square off with the Moose again on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. before returning home to host the San Antonio Rampage on Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
