Adirondack Phantoms News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Griffins goaltender Joey MacDonald stopped all 23 shots he faced to record his 15th career shutout and first of the season as Grand Rapids took a 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms at Van Andel Arena on Friday night.
Phantoms starting netminder Jamie Storr nearly withstood a first-period onslaught of shots unscathed, but the Griffins finally broke through on their 17th shot of the frame with 42 seconds remaining in the period. While operating on the game's first power play, Kent McDonell wired a pass from the right wing corner into the slot, where Clay Wilson collected it and fired it into the upper left hand corner over Storr's glove for the 1-0 lead.
The Griffins scored their second goal at 6:29 of the second period, four seconds after their second power play ended, with Donald MacLean contributing his team-leading 35th. Then Grand Rapids opened up a 3-0 lead with 2:09 left in the frame when Derek Meech walked into the Phantoms zone and let a snap shot go from the top of the left-wing circle that found its way into the net.
Rejean Beauchemin replaced Storr at the start of the third period and stopped eight of the nine shots he faced. Tomas Kopecky wrapped up the scoring at 11:44 of the third period with his 15th of the season.
The game marked Grand Rapids' eighth in a row without a loss - 7-0-0-1 in that span - and was the eighth time this season the Phantoms have been held scoreless. The eight shutouts against tie a franchise record established twice before, in 2001-02 and again in 2002-03.
Philadelphia now heads to Chicago to meet the Wolves at Allstate Arena at 8:00 Saturday night. The Phantoms return home on Sunday to host the Springfield Falcons at the Wachovia Center at 6:05. The first 4,000 fans will receive an Antero Niittymaki figurine courtesy of Toyota, and the game will be televised by Comcast SportsNet on a one-hour tape delay beginning at 7pm. As always, kids tickets for all Phantoms games are just $8.00. Tickets are available online at www.phantomshockey.com or by phone at (215) 336-2000, (856) 338-9000 or (302) 984-2000.
