Portland Pirates News Release

The Portland Pirates players, coaches, staff, and ownership group have committed to fight heart disease and stroke - the #1 and #3 killers in Maine - by partnering in the 2006 Southern Maine Heart Walk on May 21st. The walk will kick-off at 8:30 AM with a breakfast celebration at the University of Southern Maine's Sullivan Gym, followed by a walk around Back Cove beginning at 9:00 AM.

My wife, Sara, and I have agreed to be this year's Heart Walk Chairs. To help reach the overall goal of $275,000, we have created a walk team called the "Pirates Plank Walkers" and have set an aggressive fundraising goal of $25,000 and a goal to put together a team of 185 walkers - the largest Walk Team ever in southern Maine. Funds for this campaign will support the American Heart Association's lifesaving research and education.

Last year, almost a million dollars came into the state of Maine through American Heart Association research grants. Through educational efforts, the AHA is working to educate our youth on healthy eating habits and exercise, educate the public on the signs and symptoms of heart disease and stroke and increase the number of people receiving early treatment for these diseases.

Today we invite our fans and customers to click below and join us in this important fight against heart disease and stroke. As a member of the Pirates Plank Walkers team, you will receive a Pirates Plank Walkers T-shirt on the day of the walk.

If you are unable to join our team but would like to donate to this worthy cause, you can make a donation online by clicking below. If you would like to make a donation off-line, you can download and print a pledge or donation form. On behalf of the Portland Pirates, I would like to thank you in advance for supporting the American Heart Association and the 2006 Southern Maine Heart Walk.

We look forward to walking with you on May 21st.
