Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals (42-17-5-1) scored the final three goals of the game to skate past the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (38-16-2-4) on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope.
The Baby Pens jumped in front with a late first-period goal. Rob Schremp made a tape-to-tape pass from the right faceoff dot to Reagan Rome at the left edge of the slot. Rome shoveled the puck past Norfolk netminder Corey Crawford at 18:15.
The Admirals charged back with a tying goal midway through the second period. Martin St. Pierre got the puck at the bottom of the left circle and surveyed the traffic in front of Wilkes-Barre goalie Nolan Schaefer. He fired a pass toward the goalmouth that deflected off Troy Brouwer's skate at 8:47. It was Brouwer's 32nd goal - one shy of tying the single-season franchise record for goals in a season currently held by Rene Bourque (2004-05) and Brandon Bochenski (2006-07).
Schremp put the Penguins back in front early in the third period. After Crawford made a kick save on Jonathan Filewich, Schremp found the rebound in the slot. He chipped it over Crawford's left leg to put Wilkes-Barre in the lead 2-1 at 6:36 of the final frame.
Norfolk tied the game with a power play goal three minutes later. Mike Jarmuth sent a crisp pass from the right faceoff circle to Carl Corazzini between the goal line and the bottom left circle. Corazzini converted the pass into a goal off the tough angle at 9:41 to knot the score at 2-2.
The Admirals got a lucky bounce for the go-ahead goal late in the game. Dustin Byfuglien teed up a shot from the point that hit the crossbar and bounced off the goalie's back. As the puck nearly trickled across the goal line, Schaefer swept it back to the top of the goalmouth with the paddle of his stick. The puck caromed off Adam Burish's skate and into the cage for a 3-2 Norfolk lead at 16:29.
Martin St. Pierre salted away the victory with an empty-net goal at 18:53, as the Admirals picked up two valuable points on their East Division rivals from Wilkes-Barre.
Corey Crawford (29 shots, 27 saves) was solid in net for the win. Nolan Schaefer (37 shots, 34 saves) was saddled with the loss.
Norfolk was 1-7 on the power play while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 2-4.
The Admirals will continue a five-game homestand with a pair of games against the Binghamton Senators. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
