
Devils Sink River Rats with Big Third Period, 4-3

LOWELL, Mass. "" Dan LaCouture scored two goals, including the game-winner midway through the third period, to lead the Lowell Devils (30-24-5-3) to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Albany River Rats (28-27-3-2) Wednesday night at Tsongas Arena.
A quick-moving first period saw plenty of shots but only one goal. Matt Murley scored on the power play at 8:08 to give the visiting Rats a 1-0 lead. The two rookie goaltenders, Jordan Parise for Lowell and Justin Peters for Albany, made a combine! d 28 saves, and the Devils led in shots 15-14.
Lowell got on the board in the second, with LaCouture potting his fourth of the season and second in as many games, on a rebound chance in front of the net. The power play goal tied it at 1-1 at 10:30. Albany answered at 15:10 with Keith Aucoin's 21st of the campaign. Shots were 26-25 after two periods in favor of the home team.
The wild third period saw several lead changes and four goals. The Devils struck first, with Petr Vrana sending a wrist shot home at 5:42 to tie the game at 2-2. Shortly thereafter the Rats regained the lead with Murley's second of the night at 8:20. Tomas Pihlman responded with his seventh of the season just 28 seconds later to once again tie it up and LaCouture finished t! he comeback with his second of the evening at 9:29. Albany pelted Parise with 15 third period shots and 40 in the game, and had a pair of power plays in the final six minutes but could not get the equalizer.
Lowell jumped over the Worcester Sharks in the Atlantic Division standings with the victory, coupled with the Sharks 4-1 loss in Portland tonight. They now have sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot in the division.
The Devils hit the road for three games this weekend, heading to Albany on Friday, Hartford on Saturday and Providence on Sunday. They return to home ice on Wednesday, March 14th against the Springfield Falcons.
