Admirals Fall to IceHogs 3-2
February 22, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI- Red was the color of choice Friday night at the Bradley Center. The Wisconsin Badger Band pounded tunes, Bucky Badger rallied fans, fans donned their Badger jerseys, even the Rockford IceHogs' sweaters were red; but it was former Badger Jack Skille who stole the show. Skille scored the game winning goal with just 57 seconds remaining to give the IceHogs a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals.
Special teams played a crucial role in the game as three of the five tallies came on the power play.
Rockford capitalized on a man advantage midway through the first stanza after Alexander Sulzer went into the box for a holding penalty. The goal came as IceHog defenseman Martin St.Pierre lined a pass to fellow blue-liner Troy Brouer before letting go of a one-timer that dove through traffic and into the far-side of the net.
Milwaukee would answer back at the 13:09 mark in the second stanza. The play began as Kelsey Wilson shot what appeared to be an icing, but the puck took a weird bounce over an IceHog stick on the touchup. Instead of icing, Jason Guerriero settled the puck and drove to the net before scored his seventh goal of the year on a wrist shot between former Admiral netminder Wade Flaherty's legs.
Rockford struck again on the man-advantage with 4:07 left in the second period. As Rockford packed all around the net, a clearing attempt finally popped out to the waiting Bryan Bickell. Bickell collapsed on Milwaukee goalie Pekka Rinne and fired a snap shot through the traffic past the outreached stick of Rinne.
Milwaukee would knot the game at two with a power play goal of their own. Milwaukee controlled the man advantage dominating play in the Rockford end. The Admirals had two early opportunities including a shot that bounded off of the inside of the post, but it wasn't until defenseman Cody Franson got a turn would the Ads complete the connection with 11:04 remaining in the final period. Franson hammered a slap shot over the glove of Flaherty.
It wasn't until they were only :57 seconds remaining that Skille would get the chance to shine in front of his former UW-Madison band members. Skille picked off a breakout attempt by the Admirals and streaked down the left side boards before firing a wrist shot that cruised over Rinne's left leg to secure the IceHogs' victory.
Milwaukee pulled Rinne to the bench in hopes of an extra attacker goal, as they did the pervious night. It was not to be though, as the Rockford defense held strong and was able to clear a last second Milwaukee scoring opportunity.
The Admirals and the IceHogs will continue to battle as both team head to Rockford for two more matchups in the next give days. The Admirals will return home next Friday for a matchup against the Providence Bruins. The first 7,500 fans will receive a whoopee cushion, courtesy of Chili Man Chili.
