NORFOLK, VA - Corey Crawford made 32 saves and Troy Brouwer netted two goals as the Norfolk Admirals (26-8-4-1) defeated the Lowell Devils (17-17-2-1) 3-1 in front of 5,260 on Saturday night at Scope. The win combined with a Hershey loss ties the Admirals with the Bears for first place in the East Division and the American Hockey League.
The Devils opened scoring just 42 seconds into the game. Rod Pelley found a bouncing puck in the goalmouth and sent it past Crawford.
Brouwer knotted the score at 1-1 midway through the second stanza. He skated over the Lowell blueline to the top of the slot and wired home a wrist shot over netminder Jordan Parise's right shoulder at 14:49.
A tick-tack-toe play with the man advantage 7:40 into the final frame gave Norfolk the lead. Carl Corazzini dished the puck from the left circle to Martin St. Pierre at the right circle, who fired the puck back across the slot to Brouwer on the doorstep. Brouwer redirected the pass into the back of the net for his second tally of the contest.
Cam Barker capped scoring four minutes later as an Admirals power play expired. Barker sent a shot from the left dot five hole on Parise at 11:33.
Crawford (33 shots, 32 saves) came up with 12 third-period saves to make the lead hold for his 22nd win this season and his sixth straight victory at Scope. Parise (24 shots, 21 saves) picked up the loss.
The Admirals were 1-5 on the power play. Lowell was 0-2, as the Admirals penalty kill was perfect for the tenth straight game. The Admirals PK has killed 49 consecutive penalties in that stretch and is 53-54 (98.1%) in their last eleven games.
Hershey (25-7-3-4) lost its third straight game tonight in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (25-7-2-2). The Admirals and Bears sit atop the East Division as each have 57 points in 39 games, while Wilkes-Barre is in third place with 54 points in 36 games.
The Admirals' next games will take place at Scope next Friday and Saturday night when the Albany River Rats come to Norfolk for a pair of 7:15 matches. On Friday, lady Admirals fans will receive carnations upon exiting the building courtesy of Norfolk Florist. Saturday night is an AJ Gator's Pre-Game Party Night.
