Iowa Chops News Release

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA - The Iowa Stars and the Toronto Marlies met for the first time this season and the only time at Ricoh Coliseum. For the second consecutive game, the Iowa Stars and netminder Steve Silverthorn registered a shutout road victory, this time a 3-0 whitewash over the Toronto Marlies on Saturday night. The victory gave Iowa five out of a possible six points on the three game road trip.

After skating a scoreless first period, the Iowa Stars registered the game's maiden marker for the third consecutive game midway through the second period. Rookie Center Dan Hacker gave the Stars a 1-0 lead when he redirected Mark Fistric's shot from the left point past Toronto goalie Justin Pogge. Marius Holtet earned the other assist on the even-strength goal at 7:52 of the second period. The Stars second period onslaught continued when Junior Lessard fired a slap-shot from the top of the left circle that Pogge had no chance to stop. The goal, assisted by Jamie Johnson, was Lessard's 12th of the year.

Mario Scalzo gave the Stars a 3-0 lead with :21 seconds left in the second period with a power-play tally. Scalzo's goal, a shot from the point, was assisted by Yared Hagos and Janos Vas. Vas now has a five-game points-streak in which he has one goal and four assists.

As was the case in Friday's 2-0 shutout win in Hamilton, Iowa Goaltender Steve Silverthorn was again honored as ‘The Number One Star of the Game' stopping all 24 Toronto shots in Saturday's 3-0 win. He helped preserve his second whitewash with a 10 save performance in the third period. Silverthorn now holds the longest shutout sequence for an Iowa netminder with 120 straight minutes of shutout hockey.
