Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Alaska built a 3-0 lead entering the final period, then had to fight off a spirited Las Vegas comeback as Dan Murphy finished with 29 saves in a 3-2 Aces win before 4,197 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.
Murphy looked sharp in the first period, and after weathering an early Wranglers flurry, the Aces gained control of the game as Mike Lee scored at 5:58 of the first period and Joe Talbot followed with just 36 seconds left in the frame. Talbot's goal came off a perfect cross-ice pass from Charles Linglet, who had arrived in Anchorage just four hours before game time after a two-week stint in Salt Lake City with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies. Defenseman Ryan Moren was credited with helpers on both first period goals.
Kimbi Daniels extended the margin to 3-0 with a one-timer at 8:11 of the second period, assisted by Wes Dorey and Ryan Bast. Having outshot Vegas 21-16 through 40 minutes, Alaska had little cause for concern entering the third period, only to see the Wranglers come to life after Chris Kenady went coast-to-coast on a breakaway that brought the visitors within 3-1 at the 7:43 mark. Greg Day blasted home the second Vegas goal with more than seven minutes left in regulation, and suddenly, the Aces were in trouble. But Murphy later stopped Day at point blank range, as he had done earlier in the first period, and Alaska held on despite getting outshot 15-6 in the final period.
The Aces (25-15-4 overall) won for just the second time in eight meetings with the Wranglers this year and now embark on a 10-day, six-game road trip that starts Tuesday at Bakersfield with a 6:00 p.m. date against the suddenly resurgent Condors, winners of three straight, followed by a Wednesday game in Long Beach, Friday in Fresno, and back to Bakersfield on Saturday. This week's games will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
