Streaks are over

San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– The San Diego Gulls' winning streak is over. Mark Pederson's point streak... snapped. Greg Barber's point streak... done. Well, they had to end sometime. But while the streaks are finished, the Gulls keep plugging away.

The Gulls just finished a three-game series in Boise, Idaho taking three of a possible six points. Obviously Steve Martinson would've loved to get all six, but earning a split is nothing he's hanging his head over. Especially considering the fact that playing at the Bank of America Centre the last few years has been an utter nightmare for most visiting clubs.

With the 1-1-1 record last week, the Gulls maintain their Pacific Division lead, three points ahead of the Las Vegas Wranglers and five points in front of the third-place Steelheads. San Diego trails the Louisiana IceGators by two points for the top spot in the Western Conference and the Wheeling Nailers by four points for the best record in the ECHL.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Feb. 4 @ Idaho:

David Bararuk scored two goals, including the game-winner with .7 seconds left in the third period to lift the Steelheads to an emotional 4-3 victory over the Gulls. It was a back-and-forth game all night long. Idaho grabbed an early 1-0 lead before the Gulls scored two straight to go ahead 2-1. The Steelheads then came back with two of their own before San Diego knotted the contest again. Overtime seemed to certainly be looming on the horizon as teams skated to a very even scoreless third period until Bararuk won it on a fluke goal. The loss ended San Diego's nine-game winning streak.

Feb. 6 @ Idaho:

Billy Tibbetts had two goals and two assists while Chris Gobert and Clayton Read each chipped in with three points, leading San Diego to an 8-2 trouncing of the Steelheads. It was a 2-2 game early in the second period, but the Gulls took over from there, scoring six unanswered goals. Pederson extended his league season high point streak to 20 games and Barber extended his career-high point streak to 13 games. Both streaks would end the next night.

Feb. 7 @. Idaho

Darrell Hay scored 1:15 into overtime to lead Idaho to a 3-2 victory in the rubber game of the three-game series. Gobert gave San Diego an early edge before the Steelheads tied it up. Samy Nasreddine put the Gulls back in front early in the second period, but Idaho quickly evened things up again. Teams skated to a scoreless third period, before Hay won it in the extra fame.

THIS WEEK:

The Gulls open a brief two-game homestand Tuesday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It will be another "College Night," with discounts on hot dogs and beverages. San Diego hosts the Las Vegas Wranglers Friday at 7:35 p.m. and the first 5,000 fans will receive a Gulls black T-shirt, courtesy of Alvarado Hospital.
