Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Chupacabras (51-56) were out-hit 17-2 in Sunday night's 8-0 loss to the Reno Aces (54-53) at Dell Diamond.
Chupacabras starter LHP Michael Roth (6-6, 4.39) was left with the loss after he surrendered six earned runs on nine hits while striking out two in 4.0 innings. The winner, Aces RHP Jake Buchanan (8-8, 5.12) was awarded the win after he shutout Round Rock's bats through 7.0 frames, permitting just three batters to reach base on a walk and two hits.
Reno's bats plated the first run of the night in the top of the second, pulling ahead 1-0 in what could have been a much bigger inning for the visitors. 3B Kevin Cron led off the side with a single, moved up to third when LF Cesar Puello was hit by a pitch before DH Yasmany Tomas singled and eventually scored on a Rey Fuentes groundout. Standing on the mound with runners on the corners and two outs, Roth was able to stop the bleeding when he retired RF Kristopher Negron on ground out to third.
Although the Chupacabras were able to navigate out of trouble, the Aces were back for more in the top of the third as they pushed the gap to 4-0. After 1B Christian Walker extended the frame with a two-out single, Cron blasted a towering home run to center that made it 3-0. C Anthony Recker and Puello then climbed aboard on a single and a walk, with Puello later scoring on an RBI single by Tomas.
The scoring parade continued for Reno in the top of the fourth as they extended their advantage to 6-0. SS Ildemaro Vargas singled before 2B Juniel Querecuto worked a walk. The next batter, Walker, brought both runners home on a double off the wall in right. In the sixth, the Aces continued to pour it on when Tomas collected his third hit and RBI of the night on a two-run triple that made it 8-0.
In a 1.0-inning appearance in the top of the fifth, rehabbing Texas Rangers RHP Chris Martin allowed no runs on two hits while picking up a strikeout. Taking over for Martin in the sixth, Round Rock reliever LHP James Jones tossed 2.0 frames in which he allowed two runs on three hits and a strikeout.
Handling the eighth and ninth, Chupacabras relievers RHP Tayler Scott and RHP R.J. Alvarez contributed scoreless innings of their own as they combined for three punchouts and three hits allowed.
After transforming back into the Express, Round Rock will look to avoid a sweep when they take on Reno in game four on Monday night at Dell Diamond. Express RHP Adrian Sampson (5-3, 4.63) is slated to start on the bump against Aces RHP Neftali Feliz (4-4, 5.56). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CDT.
