New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered to spark a five-run rally in the fourth inning for the Tacoma Rainiers, who went on to defeat the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 7-5 on Sunday afternoon.
After New Orleans used a five-run third inning on Saturday to beat the Rainiers 5-3, Tacoma batted around in the fourth inning on Sunday to erase a 3-1 deficit. Nieuwenhuis smacked his fourth home run of the year to right field, and with two outs, six consecutive batters reached base.
Gordon Beckham tied the score with a single as Zach Vincej eluded the tag of catcher Tomas Telis, and Cam Perkins followed with a two-run single up the middle to end the outing of Baby Cakes starter Tyler Cloyd. Cameron Rupp added an RBI single against Jeff Kinley to cap the inning.
The 'Cakes had scored three times in the second inning when Jon Rodriguez roped a two-run double into the left field corner and scored on a single by Austin Dean, who added a run-scoring ground out in the seventh to draw New Orleans within two.
Tacoma tacked on an insurance tally against Nick Wittgren in the ninth on a two-out single by Seth Mejias-Brean, and Nick Rumbelow gave up an RBI triple to Peter Mooney before retiring Dean for the final out to earn his first save.
Christian Bergman (7-8) scattered three runs and six hits in five innings to pick up the win.
Coming off a win over Reno five days ago where he retired the first 18 batters he faced, Cloyd (2-4) was unable to duplicate the success, allowing six runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
The 'Cakes wrap up the series and the homestand on Monday at 7 p.m.
