Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons lost to the West Division-leading Alaska Aces by a score of 5-2 at Save Mart Center. Charles Simard and John Wroblewski scored the only two goals for the Falcons, which both came in the first period. The Aces were led by two goals apiece from ECHL leading goal scorer Chris Minard and Mike Scott.
The Falcons jumpstarted the scoring at only 1:39 into the first period when Simard quickly received the puck from a face-off and fired a slap shot from the blue line past Aces goaltender Lance Mayes. Wroblewski then added to the Falcons' lead at 13:16 when he broke away at his own blue line and charged forward, netting his 11th goal of the season unassisted.
The Aces brought it back to a one-goal game in the second period when Minard slipped the puck underneath a diving Jamie Hodson to mark his 40th goal of the season. The goal came at 4:46 and was the only goal of the second period.
The Falcons' 2-1 lead was very short-lived when Scott scored an unassisted goal only six seconds into the third, the quickest goal ever scored on the Falcons at the start of a period. The Aces then scored again at 2:44 when Cal Benazic netted the puck from the left of Hodson to give them their first lead of the night at 3-2.
The Aces took the lead and ran with it, scoring two more unanswered goals in the third. Minard marked his 41st goal of the season and second of the night at 15:52 with a shot that bounced in the net then out. Scott then scored his second goal of the night on an empty net at 19:08 to finalize the score at 5-2.
This loss in front of a crowd of 3,229 is the Falcons' second in a row at home and brings the Falcons' overall record to 34-20-7. Fresno still holds the fourth place position in the West Division with 75 points.
