Aces storm back to beat Falcons 5-2

March 16, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – Mike Scott scored the first of his two third period goals just six seconds into the frame, as Alaska rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to win its third straight, 5-2 over Fresno before 3,229 at the Save-Mart Center.

The Falcons jumped a two-goal lead against Aces goalie Lance Mayes, who was making his first start since February 27 after being sidelined with a groin pull. Charles Simard scored on a drive from the point at 1:39 of the opening period, then hit John Wroblewski with a perfect outlet pass to set up a breakaway, which ended with the second-year pro from Notre Dame going top shelf for a 2-0 advantage at 13:16.

Trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes, Alaska got on the board when Chris Minard registered his league-leading 40th goal of the year at 4:46 of the second period, a backhander between Jamie Hodson's legs on a breakaway. Scott buried the equalizer on a wrist shot from the left circle that appeared to fool Hodson, and Cal Benazic gave the Aces their first lead at 2:44 by stuffing a centering pass from Chris Heisten by the Fresno goaltender. Minard roofed a Charles Linglet rebound with 4:08 left to give the Aces a two-goal cushion at 4-2, and Scott's empty-netter with 51.5 seconds showing on the clock accounted for the final margin.

Alaska (39-16-7 overall) out-shot the Falcons in each period and finished with a 36-24 edge for the game as Mayes picked up his ninth consecutive victory. The Aces have lost just one of their last 17 games (13-1-3) and are 12-1-1 in its last 14 on the road.

Coupled with Bakersfield's loss in Las Vegas, Alaska's victory increases its lead in the West Division to four points over the second-place Condors heading into Friday's game at Rabobank Arena, the first of two between the two top teams in not only the division but the National Conference. Both games will begin at 6:00 p.m. AST, broadcast live on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks, as well as on KFQD 750 AM, with coverage beginning 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off. The Condors defeated the Aces 3-1 last Friday, ending Alaska's club record-tying streak of 13 games without a loss.
