Indianapolis Indians News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians scored five runs in the first three innings and fended off a late-inning comeback effort from the Mud Hens to snap a two-game losing skid last night, 6-5. After Toledo opened scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Josh Lester, Indianapolis wasted no time responding. The Indians tagged Toledo starter Elvin Rodriguez for four hits in a two-run second inning, including an RBI double to right center field from Mason Martin and a run-scoring single from Jared Oliva. They tacked on three more runs in the third to extend their lead to 5-1 with a bases loaded walk drawn by Martin, RBI single from Taylor Davis and sacrifice fly from Tucupita Marcano. Toledo crept within two after a two-run fifth inning, but Davis added insurance with another RBI single in the eighth. Toledo made things more than interesting in the bottom of the ninth, with an RBI single and a wild pitch plating two for the Mud Hens in their final offensive half inning.
MARCANO CAN: Tucupita Marcano singled last night to extend his hitting streak to eight games. He has a hit in 11 of 12 games - three of which have multi-hit contests - with Indianapolis since being optioned by Pittsburgh on July 5. He has shined as Indy's leadoff hitter, reaching base safely in all 12 games and has reached 23 times (15 hits, 8 walks) in 57 plate appearances, good for a .404 on-base percentage. Marcano has walked eight times compared to 10 strikeouts, putting the ball in play over 80 percent of the time.
GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES: Travis Swaggerty led the Indians offense with three hits last night, including a double for his third consecutive game with an extra-base hit. He now has five extra-base hits in his last five games with six total runs scored. On Thursday night, he smoked his career-high seventh triple of the season, which was also the Indians 30th as a team. It is the first time they've done so since 2018, when the team finished with 30. The Indians lead the International League in triples and have three players ranked among league leaders with Travis Swaggerty (7, T-1st), Mason Martin (5, T-7th) and Ji-Hwan Bae (4, T-9th).
DAVIS DOES IT: Taylor Davis, acting as the Indians' first baseman, roped a pair of RBI doubles and drove in the eventual game-winning run as Toledo mounted a comeback to come within one run in the bottom of the ninth inning. He now has multi-hit games in two of his last three contests. In seven July games, Davis is hitting .316 (6-for-19) with four RBI and more walks (6) than strikeouts (4) to raise his average on the season to .267 (24-for-90). Overall, Davis puts the ball into play and avoids the strikeout more often than not. In 107 plate appearances this season, he has just 16 strikeouts and 12 walks.
MASON MASTERING: After a slow start to the month of July, Mason Martin is currently working a four-game hitting streak and has hit safely in five of his last six since 7/23 vs. St. Paul. His current four-gamer is his longest hitting streak since 5/22-25 (1) when he hit safely in four consecutive games with three home runs and eight total RBI. That May four-game hitting streak was part of a stretch where he hit safely in 11 of 12 games with six home runs. His one hit in each of the past two games has come for two bases and he's driven in a pair of runs in each as well. Last night, following a three-strikeout game the night before, Martin took two walks compared to just one strikeout, and recorded his 10th stolen base of the season to mark his first career season with double-digit bases swiped.
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to build on last night's win against the Mud Hens and take a series lead today at 7:05 PM ET at Fifth Third Field. The two squads are meeting for the second time this season and the first time at Toledo. The teams first met this season at Victory Field on May 17-22, and the Indians took the series victory with wins in four of the six contests. Tonight, Mike Burrows will take the mound for his first career appearance against Toledo after surrendering two runs over 3.1 innings in his last start on 7/24 vs. St. Paul. Countering for the Mud Hens will be Chi Chi Gonzalez, who made his last start vs. Indianapolis with St. Paul and surrendered two earned runs with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
BE LIKE MIKE: Mike Burrows will take the mound for Indianapolis today, looking for his first win in his seventh outing (sixth start) with Indianapolis this season. Burrows, who is currently rated as Pittsburgh's No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline, was promoted from Double-A Altoona to Indianapolis on June 16 following a stellar start to the season. Since, he is 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA (15er/21.1ip) and 24 strikeouts with the Indians. On 7/12 at Columbus, Burrows made just his second career appearance out of the bullpen and first since 2018, and fanned four batters over 2.0 perfect innings.
THIS DAY IN 2017: Tyler Glasnow struck out 12 batters through 6.1 innings for his fifth of seven 10+ strikeout games on the season. After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Pawtucket tied the game in the seventh. Both teams traded runs in the 10th, and Kevin Newman singled home Eric Wood to give the Indians a 3-2 win in the 12th frame. The bullpen excelled, adding seven strikeouts to Glasnow's 12 to set a season high of 19 strikeouts by the Indians staff in one game. The 19 strikeouts set a new Victory Field era home record and was one strikeout shy of the overall Victory Field era record, set on Aug. 15, 2003 in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Charlotte.
