Charlotte Knights News Release
(NASHVILLE, TN) - The Charlotte Knights pounded out 16 hits en route to a 7-5 win over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday night in game five of the six-game series from First Horizon Park in Nashville, TN. The win was Charlotte's second on the nine-game road trip and first against the Sounds in the series.
Mark Payton, Adam Haseley and Zach Remillard all had three hits apiece to help lead the Knights past the Sounds on Saturday. Payton finished a home run short of the cycle and his three hits bumped up his team-leading batting average to .289 on the season.
Payton started the team's scoring in the first inning thanks to a triple to begin the game. Lenyn Sosa drove him home on a sacrifice-fly RBI in the first to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead over the Sounds.
The Knights held the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third inning when Nashville slugger Jon Singleton tied the game with an RBI single. One inning later, Remillard gave the Knights a 2-1 lead with an RBI single. It was his first of two RBI singles on the night.
The Sounds battled back and took a 3-2 lead after scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Charlotte bullpen. The inning was highlighted by the second RBI single of the game for Singleton.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Knights broke out the bats in a big way, scoring four runs against the Sounds. Payton and Adam Haseley had RBI singles and Sosa added a two-run double to give the Knights a 7-3 lead at that point. Sosa led the team with three RBIs in the game. Although the Sounds came back to add two runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Charlotte bullpen was able to hold the team scoreless the rest of the way.
LHP Steven Moyers started the game for the Knights and tossed 2.1 innings. He was the first of a season-high 10 pitchers on the night for Charlotte. RHP Declan Cronin (1-0, 4.22) earned the win out of the bullpen, his first at the Triple-A level. LHP Bennett Sousa earned the save after he got the final three outs of the game in the ninth. It was his second save of the season with the Knights.
The Knights will conclude the six-game road series against the Nashville Sounds from Nashville, TN on Sunday night. First pitch on Sunday is set for 7:05 p.m. from First Horizon Park.
