Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp: Leblanc Doubles in Major League Debut

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp infielder Charles Leblanc doubled for the Miami Marlins in his major league debut on Saturday against the New York Mets from loanDepot park.

Leblanc finished Saturday's game going 1-for-3. His two-bagger in the eighth inning chased Mets starter Carlos Carrasco from the game, but the Marlins were shut out 4-0.

A native of Laval, Canada, Leblanc played in 87 games with Jacksonville to begin the 2022 season after being selected by Miami in December during the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft. He batted .302/.381/.503/.884 with 20 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs, 45 RBIs and 47 runs scored. At the time of his promotion, Leblanc was fifth in the International League in batting average, eighth in both on-base percentage and hits (96), ninth in OPS, tied for 10th in doubles, 12th in slugging percentage and tied for 14th in extra-base hits (35).

Originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 33rd round of the 2013 draft out of Vanier Secondary School (Toronto), Leblanc opted not to sign and instead attend the University of Pittsburgh. After hitting .405 with a 1.006 OPS in 2016, the Texas Rangers picked Leblanc in the fourth round of the 2016 draft.

Leblanc played in the Texas system through the 2021 season, reaching as high as Triple-A Round Rock, where he slashed .229/.313/.455/.768 last year.

In addition to Leblanc, former Jumbo Shrimp infielder Joe Dunand (May 7, Miami Marlins), right-handers Chad Smith (May 29, Colorado Rockies), Jason Alexander (June 1, Milwaukee Brewers), Aneurys Zabala (June 12, Miami Marlins), Max Meyer (July 16, Miami Marlins) and Huascar Brazoban (July 24, Miami Marlins) and outfielders Jerar Encarnacion (June 19, Miami Marlins) and JJ Bleday (July 23, Miami Marlins) have also made their major league debuts thus far during the 2022 season.

Leblanc is the 949th player to don both a Jacksonville uniform and play in the major leagues. The history of Minor League Baseball in Jacksonville dates back to 1904.
