ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints (45-41) secured at least a series split with the Iowa Cubs (44-53) on Saturday night at CHS Field, winning game five of the series by a final score of 7-1.

The action started early, as the I-Cubs scored in the first inning for the third straight game against St. Paul. After Cole Sands struck out the first two men he faced, Nick Madrigal, Narciso Crook and Matt Mervis all singled to put one on the board for Iowa.

St. Paul began their own scoring in the second inning, which began with six straight baserunners before the first out. Anderson Espinoza walked three of the six, surrendering two doubles and a single to account for the other three. Eury Ramos took over from there and recorded one out before he allowed four straight runners to reach - three on walks and one on a single. All told, the Saints sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs on six walks in the second inning, giving them a 7-1 advantage at the end of the frame.

From there, things settled down on both sides. Sands allowed at least one baserunner in every inning he pitched, but the I-Cubs couldn't drive in any more runs against him. They had similar luck against St. Paul's bullpen, stranding two more on base in the sixth before Brad Peacock recorded the Saints' first one-two-three inning of the night in the seventh.

For the I-Cubs, Nicholas Padilla pitched a scoreless third and fourth and Matt Dermody took over in the fifth, making his first relief appearance in almost a month. The lefty began his outing with a leadoff triple from Braden Bishop, but managed to strand him at third. He followed it up with a one-two-three sixth, then pitched around a walk in the seventh and a leadoff double in the eighth to complete four scoreless innings for Iowa.

Despite Dermody's scoreless effort, St. Paul's early runs proved too much for the I-Cubs to overcome. They collected just one hit in the final three frames and dropped game five of the series to St. Paul by a final score of 7-1.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Anderson Espinoza was credited with the loss tonight in his first career Triple-A start.

Narciso Crook extended his hitting streak to a career-high ten games, while Darius Hill extended his to nine games, which is one shy of his career high.

Matt Dermody's relief outing was his first since July 3 and extended his scoreless streak to 12 innings.

St. Paul did not hit a home run tonight - just the third game out of 17 against Iowa this season where the Saints have not hit at least one ball out.

Iowa will hope to split the series against St. Paul with a win tomorrow in the finale. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Saints is set for 2:07. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
