From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians won their third straight game behind their second shutout of the current winning streak, 5-0, last night in Rochester. Brandon Waddell rebounded from an uncharacteristic start in his Triple-A debut by tossing 5.2 scoreless innings, scattering four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Indy's bullpen completed the shutout, with Tanner Anderson (1.1ip, 1h, 1k), Josh Smoker (1.0ip, 1h, 2k) and Casey Sadler (1.0ip, 2bb, 1k) doing the trick. The Tribe out-hit the Red Wings 8-6; Jose Osuna led the charge with a 2-for-5, two-RBI performance from the cleanup spot. Christopher Bostick walked and scored on an Osuna fielder's choice in the first. The Tribe then scored two runs in the sixth thanks to a two-out rally. A Jacob Stallings walk immediately led to a run-scoring double by Kevin Kramer and following another free pass to Max Moroff, Eric Wood roped an RBI double. Osuna added an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh to score Kevin Newman making it 4-0. Indy's final run came in the ninth as Newman walked, took second on a balk, advanced to third on a deep flyout and raced home on a wild pitch.

SHUT 'EM OUT: The Indians' 5-0 shutout win last night marked their seventh shutout already this season, tied with Rochester for second most in the International League behind Lehigh Valley (8). Indy's last shutout victory over the Red Wings prior to last night was a 2-0 triumph at Victory Field on June 1, 2016. The Tribe blanked their opponent 10 times in 2017, making them one of nine teams in the league with double-digit shutouts, but they didn't pick up their seventh shutout of the season until game No. 112 on Aug. 4 at Louisville (W, 1-0).

SEASON-HIGH STREAK: The Indians are riding a season-high three-game winning streak for a third time, but they've missed opportunities at a fourth consecutive win in each of their first two attempts. Indy carried its first three-game winning streak into a May 16 game at Norfolk, but a Jordan Luplow game-tying homer in the ninth wasn't enough as Indy was walked off by the Tides in the bottom half, 4-3. One week later, another three-game winning streak was snapped on May 23 at The Vic as the visiting Louisville Bats dropped the Indians, 10-2. Both of Indy's three-game streaks have been snapped on Wednesdays; the Tribe are just 1-8 in games played on Wednesdays this season.

ON THE ROAD IN ROCHESTER: The Indians and Red Wings meet tonight in their second of six matchups this season. Indy and Rochester split a pair of four-game sets last season, marking the eighth time in nine seasons where the Indians have either split or won the head-to-head series over the Red Wings. The Tribe are just 40-49 (.449) in Rochester dating back to 1988, but the Tribe do own an advantageous 13-6 record at Frontier Field over the last five seasons.

ROAD WARRIORS: Five current Tribesmen are hitting for a higher average on the road than at Victory Field this season. Wyatt Mathisen has the largest home/road split with a .343 road clip and .250 average at The Vic. Kevin Kramer (.295 to .214), Jose Osuna (.366 to .290), Christopher Bostick (.340 to .297) and Erich Weiss (.250 to .228) all have hit much better on the road this season, as well.

NEW MONTH, SAME NEWMAN: After recording a team-leading 39 hits en route to a .361 average in May, Kevin Newman opened the month of June with a 2-for-4 performance Friday and consecutive 1-for-3 showings on Saturday and again last night, leaving his June average at .400 (4-for-10) entering play tonight. He swiped three bases in the Scranton/W-B series to move his season total to 13, tied with Durham's Andrew Velazquez for most in the International League. Newman's 36 knocks since May 8 are tied with Toledo's Ronny Rodriguez for most in the IL since that date.

CAN'T STOP STALLINGS: Jacob Stallings went 3-for-4 with three singles, two RBI and three runs scored in Saturday night's 8-0 win over Scranton/W-B, and he finished 1-for-4 with a double, run scored and walk in last night's 5-0 victory. His .297 average is tied for 12th in the IL, slightly below his .301 average in 62 games for the Tribe in 2017. Stallings' .297 clip is second among IL catchers, trailing only Buffalo backstop Danny Jansen (.317). He has been behind the plate for Indy in five of its seven shutouts this season.
