Columbus Clippers News Release
The Columbus Clippers used early offense to defeat the Norfolk Tides tonight in game one of their three-game series at Huntington Park.
Two runs in the first, one in the second and two in the fifth, highlighted by an Eric Stamets homerun and Brandon Barnes double provided the Clippers a 5-4 lead they would never relent.
Norfolk hooped on the board first with Caleb Joseph RBI single off Clippers' starter Matt Whitehouse in the top of the first inning.
Down 1-0, the Clippers fought back with two runs in the bottom of the first. With two men on, Francisco Mejia singled to score one. Barnes advanced to third on the hit and came around to score when the throw to third was wild.
Now trailing 2-1, the Tides regained the lead in the top of the second. Steve Wilkerson ad Renato Nunez both laced booming RBI doubles, and Joseph delivered another RBI single to put Norfolk ahead 4-2.
The Clippers cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second when Stamets drilled a solo shot well over the wall in left field to make it 4-3, Norfolk.
They waited to score again until the bottom of the fifth when they took the lead for good. With two men on, Barnes stroked a double off the top of the left field wall, scoring both men for a 5-4 advantage.
Nellie Rodriguez added two more runs for Columbus in the bottom of the eighth with a mammoth homerun to left-centerfield.
The Clippers' bullpen arms, Luke Eubank, Louis Head and Matt Belisle stood tall until the ninth when Cam Hill finished off the save and 7-4 win.
The teams will face off tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. at Huntington Park.
