Tazawa to Start for Sea Dogs Tonight

Portland, Maine- Right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa will start for the Portland Sea Dogs on Monday night, June 27th at 7:00 PM when the Sea Dogs take on the New Britain Rock Cats (Twins).

Tazawa missed the entire 2010 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 25 year-old made six rehab starts with Single-A Salem this season with a 0-1 record and a 6.05 ERA. After allowing twelve earned runs over his first seven and one-third innings pitched, Tazawa has given up just one run over his last twelve innings, all with Salem.

Tazawa made his professional debut with the Sea Dogs in 2009 notching a 9-5 record with a 2.57 ERA in 18 games earning a spot on the Eastern League All-Star roster. He was also selected to participate in the 2009 MLB Futures Game.

The Yokohama, Japan native would climb all the way to the Boston Red Sox in his first professional season. He made six appearances for the Red Sox, including four starts, posting a 2-3 record with a 7.46 ERA.

Prior to his injury, Tazawa was ranked as the sixth overall prospect in the Red Sox system according to Baseball America. He was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent on December 3, 2008.

Monday night's game will be televised live on the New England Sports Network (NESN).
