
Chiang & Hazelbaker Extend Hit Streaks to 10

Portland, Maine- The Bowie Baysox (31-31) collected eleven hits and Portland committed five errors as the Baysox sailed past the Sea Dogs 7-3 Friday night at Hadlock Field to kick-off a three game weekend series. Portland falls to 20-39 on the season.
The Baysox spoiled the Hadlock Field debut of Portland starter Chris Balcom-Miller, batting around and scoring six runs in the top of the first. Six hits, four of them doubles, and a Portland error led to the big inning for Bowie.
After retiring the lead-off batter, Buck Briton doubled and would score on a Caleb Joseph RBI single to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead. Robbie Widlansky followed with a RBI double scoring Joseph. After a throwing error by third baseman Will Vazquez allowing Brandon Waring to reach, LJ Hoes, 3-for-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI, delivered a two run double as Bowie took a commanding 4-0 lead. Pedro Florimon would add a RBI double and Billy Rowell a RBI single to complete the monster first inning.
Balcom-Miller (1-2) would not get of the second inning lasting only 1.2 innings allowing the six runs (three earned), on six hits. He walked one and struck out one suffering the loss. The 22 Year-old entered the game with a 1-1 record and 2.45 ERA in two Double-A starts. The 26th ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization was 3-1 with a 2.34 ERA in Single-A Salem before earning a promotion to Double-A Portland on May 31st.
Jeremy Hazelbaker led-off the game with a triple to extend his hit streak to ten games. Hazelbaker would score on a Jon Hee RBI single to left.
Kyle Fernandes relieved Balcom-Miller and tossed 3.1 innings of outstanding relief allowing only one unearned run in the sixth inning. Fernandes scattered four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four, including striking out the side in the fourth.
Chorye Spoone (1-3) earned his first Double-A win of the season holding the Sea Dogs to three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Portland would pick-up their second run when Mitch Dening's ground out to third scoring Jorge Padron in the fifth. Will Vazquez ripped a double to pick-up his third RBI of the season for Portland's third run in the seventh.
Chih-Hsien Chiang extended his hit streak to ten games with a double in the eighth inning.
Pedro Viola entered the game with the tying run on-deck in the eighth inning. He would toss 1.1 no-hit innings to earn his first save of the season.
The two clubs will resume the series on Saturday with a 6:00 PM start at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs have not yet named a starter. Bowie will send lefty Mike Ballard (0-0, 1.29) to the mound.
