Altoona Curve News Release
READING, Pa. - In his Double-A debut, Kyle McPherson was one strike away from tossing six scoreless innings, but a home run by Cody Overbeck derailed his night and led the Reading Phillies to a 4-0 victory against the Altoona Curve on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
McPherson, a Florida State League All-Star in 2011 with High-A Bradenton, pitched five scoreless innings, including setting down 12 straight from the first to the fifth but allowed three runs to score with two down in the sixth. In the sixth, with Niuman Romero on second base, Overbeck homered to the opposite field, breaking a 0-0 tie and placing the Phillies in front, 2-0.
The next batter, Carlos Rivero also homered off McPherson (0-1) to make it 3-0. All told, McPherson pitched extremely well, striking out three and he did not allow a walk. Diego Moreno came on in relief of McPherson and allowed a run in 1.1 innings of work. Tim Alderson pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
For the Phillies, B.J. Rosenberg was dynamite as he tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The Curve's best chance came in the fourth inning with two on and no one down, but Quincy Latimore lined into a double play to end the threat. Phillippe Aumont worked the final two innings of the shutout, getting out of runners on first and third in the ninth. The shutout is the fourth time this season the Curve have failed to score in a ballgame.
With the loss, Altoona is back to an even .500 record on the season and the Phillies are to six games above .500.
The Curve (30-30) and the Phillies (33-27) will square off in their second of three games on Saturday as RHP Aaron Pribanic (5-3, 2.81) will make the start for Altoona and he will be opposed by RHP JC Ramirez (5-4, 3.57). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa. with pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network beginning at 6:05 p.m.
