Rock Cats defeat Erie

NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Britain pounded out 12 hits and Bobby Lanigan turned in another solid start as the Rock Cats defeated Erie, 4-3 before a sellout crowd of 6,480 on Friday night. It was the second consecutive sellout crowd and ninth of the season.

The Seawolves struck first when John Murrian delivered an RBI triple in the top of the second for the 1-0 lead. Erie tacked on another run in the fourth when Audy Ciriaco led off with a double and came around to score on Michael Rockett's one-out fielder's choice that was fielded by shortstop Chris Cates.

The Rock Cats were held scoreless until the fourth inning. With one out, Evan Bigley worked a walk and moved to third on Yangervis Solarte's single to right field. Jair Fernandez walked to load the bases before Mark Dolenc sliced a single into right to plate Bigley and cut the lead in half, 2-1. Deibinson Romero then hit a grounder to shortstop that scored Solarte to tie the game. Dolenc was thrown out at second on the play to leave runners in the corners with two outs. Chris Cates and Chris Herrmann added RBI singles to put the Rock Cats on top, 4-2.

Lanigan (5-4) limited the Seawolves to two runs on seven hits in six innings. Lanigan struck out four and walked just one. Bruce Pugh added two shutout innings - allowing just one hit - to notch his second save.

Brooks Brown (0-1) surrendered four runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings for Erie.
