Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Trenton, New Jersey- The Trenton Thunder scored five runs in the fifth inning en route to a 7-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs Wednesday night. Jose Pirela hit a three-run triple, while Cody Johnson and Addison Maruszak also added RBI hits as part of the big inning. Dellin Betances (1-1) pitched five solid innings for Trenton to earn his first win of the season. Stolmy Pimentel allowed eight hits and four runs and was tagged with his fourth loss in five starts this season.
After escaping from some tight spots earlier in the game, Pimentel could not make it out of the fifth inning. He gave up a double and single to open the frame, then managed a fly out before his departure. Tommy Hottovy came in and allowed an RBI infield single to make it 3-1 Trenton. After a strikeout, Hottovy walked Corban Joseph, setting the stage for Pirela's bases-clearing triple. Maruszak followed with another base hit to account for the final margin.
After home runs by Johnson and Joseph made it 2-0 Thunder after four innings, Mitch Dening blasted his second home run of the season off Betances in the fifth to make it a one run game. That's as close as the Sea Dogs would get, however, as Trenton's big inning came in the bottom half. Will Middlebrooks and Jorge Padron also had good offensive performances for Portland. Both had a pair of singles, but the Sea Dogs couldn't quite put together the same type of rally that the Thunder did.
Both bullpens excelled in the late innings. After his tough start, Hottovy rebounded to retire the last seven batters he faced. Santo Luis also worked a perfect inning for Portland. Trenton's Josh Schmidt went three scoreless innings and Fernando Hernandez an empty ninth. The loss drops the Sea Dogs to just 2-9 away from Hadlock Field on the season.
Portland concludes its four-game series with Trenton tomorrow night. Stephen Fife will make his fifth start of the year against the Thunder lefty Manny Banuelos. The Sea Dogs start a three-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats at Hadlock Field Friday night. It will also be a Fireworks Night made possible by U.S Cellular. Sunday, May 8th will be Portland's annual Mother's Day 5K Road Race. For tickets or road race registration information, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
