Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (12-14) rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (9-14) Wednesday night at Waterfront Park. Corban Joseph and Cody Johnson both homered, Jose Pirela drove-in three runs and Dellin Betances picked-up his first victory in 2011.
Johnson's second inning and Joseph's fourth inning homeruns were both solo shots to give the Thunder a two-run lead. Joseph's shot was his first long ball in a Thunder uniform and his first since July 6, 2010, when he was playing in Advanced-A with the Tampa Yankees.
After a Mitch Dening solo homerun for Portland in the top of the fifth cut the Thunder lead to 2-1, the Thunder would look to answer in the bottom half of the frame. Johnson would pick-up his second RBI of the night on an infield single to shortstop, scoring Dan Brewer. The bases were loaded three batters later for Pirela, and the Venezuelan shortstop would come through, sending a line drive into the gap in left-centerfield to clear the bags. Trenton's lead was extended to 7-1 a batter later when Addison Maruszak lined a single to center to bring home Pirela.
Dellin Betances hurled five innings with the Dening homerun his only blemish of the night. The newly acquired Josh Schmidt spelled a tired Thunder bullpen by throwing three scoreless innings on the back of Betances.
The Thunder will wrap-up their seven-game homestand Thursday night at 7:05 PM in the finale of their four-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox). Yankees top left-handed pitching prospect Manny Banuelos (0-0, 1.56) will get the pearl for Trenton. Portland (2-2, 4.50) will send RHP Stephen Fife to the mound. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.
Thursday is a Cinco De Mayo Party with Fireworks following the game at Waterfront Park. It's also a Thirsty Thursday presented by Budweiser and WPST. Call the Thunder Box Office at 609-394-3300 or log on to trentonthunder.com to reserve your seats today.
