Shaky Seventh Does in B-Mets, 9-3

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Erie SeaWolves converted two B-Mets defensive misplays into five runs in the seventh inning en route to a 9-3 win at NYSEG Stadium tonight.

Edgar Ramirez, while attempting to protect a 3-2 Binghamton lead, kicked off the fateful seventh as the first man out of the pen and promptly allowed a leadoff home run to Bryan Holaday.

Two batters later, Francisco Martinez lofted a high popup behind first base that appeared to be the second out of the inning. Binghamton second baseman Josh Satin camped underneath the drive, but could not secure the catch as it kicked off the heel of his glove and fell to ground for his third error of the season.

After Justin Henry flew out to centerfield, Jamie Johnson sent a pop fly approximately 25 feet deep into left field. Shortstop Jordany Valdespin drifted back, but overran the ball and failed to make the catch, watching it drop innocently to the grass for a base hit.

Following a Brandon Douglas walk to load the bases, Erie right fielder Ben Guez made the B-Mets pay for their mistakes by roping a bases-clearing triple to left field to give the SeaWolves a 6-3 lead. Erie tacked on another run in the frame on a Roy Merritt wild pitch.

The five-run seventh spoiled a potential win for B-Mets starter Robert Carson. The southpaw fought through six innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Handed a four-run lead, Erie reliever Lester Oliveros shut the B-Mets offense down. In two scoreless innings of work, the Venezuelan lefty struck out six and allowed just one hit.

Before the disastrous seventh, the B-Mets had taken a one-run lead on Brahiam Maldonado's two-run home run in the fifth inning. Maldonado's drive, his sixth of the season, was slugged off Erie start Jacob Turner. Turner, ranked as the #1 prospect in the Tigers system by *Baseball America*, allowed three runs and five hits in a five inning no-decision.

Austin Wood closed things down in the ninth for the SeaWolves by inducing Satin to bounce into a game-ending ground out. It made a winner out of Ramon Garcia for the first time this season. The right-hander worked a scoreless sixth as the first man out of the pen to relieve Turner.

The B-Mets (8-14) will be back in action tomorrow against the SeaWolves (11-13) to wrap up their abbreviated series. RHP Brandon Moore (2-0, 3.86) will face RHP Mark Sorensen (1-1, 4.71) with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm.
