Texas falls in Abbotsford

Abbotsford, BC, Canada - The Texas Stars (21-12-2-4, 48 points) were defeated by the Abbotsford Heat (19-16-2-3, 43 points) 3-1 on Friday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Heat forward David Van der Gulik had a goal and an assist to lead Abbotsford to its third straight win. Heat goalie Matt Keetley (7-4-2) stopped 24 Stars shots in the win. Texas goalie Matt Climie (10-11-3) made 31 saves in the defeat. Stars defenseman Maxime Fortunus scored the lone Texas goal, as the Stars fell to 11-6-1-2 on the road this year. The Stars will meet the Heat again on Saturday at 6:00 PM (PST) in Abbotsford.

The Heat tallied the only goal of the first period, striking just 3:53 into the first meeting between the two clubs. Defenseman Brad Cole fired a shot to the Texas net from the blueline. Texas goalie Matt Climie made the save, but kicked the rebound out to Abbotsford forward David Van der Gulik, who potted his fifth goal of the season and gave the Heat a 1-0 lead.

Abbotsford extended its lead to 2-0 at 8:45 of the second period. Forward Riley Armstrong ripped a one-timer from the left-wing circle, beating Texas goalie Matt Climie on the stick side for his seventh goal of the year. The Stars got on the board 1:05 later, trimming the Heat lead to 2-1. Defenseman Maxime Fortunus blasted a slapshot past Abbotsford goalie Matt Keetley at 9:50, scoring his fifth goal of the season.

In the third period, Van der Gulik set up Brett Sutter's fourth goal of the year at 15:50, expanding the Heat's lead to 3-1. Van der Gulik sent a backhand pass to Sutter, who finished off a two-on-one with a one-timer past Climie.

The Stars remain in Abbotsford, BC for a rematch on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 6:00 PM (CST). The Stars return home to host San Antonio at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Cedar Park Center. The first 3,000 fans receive a Texas Stars Puck Bottle Opener. The Stars will also host the Toronto Marlies at 7:30 PM on Friday, Jan. 15, handing out Texas Stars Fleece Blankets to the first 2,000 fans. Also, fans will be able to purchase $2.00 domestic drafts and $1.00 hot dogs. All games can be heard on the Stars flagship station ESPNAustin 104.9 FM "The Horn" or ESPNAustin 1530-AM.
