Whitfield Recalled By Boston, Marquardt Returns From Reading

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have recalled center Trent Whitfield and reassigned left wing Matt Marquardt to Providence from the Reading Royals of the ECHL. With the moves, the P-Bruins have 24 players on their roster, including 14 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.

Whitfield, 32, enjoyed a month-long call-up to the NHL from Oct. 21 - Nov. 20, going scoreless in seven games for Boston. In 26 games for Providence, the club's captain ranks third on the team in scoring with 20 points and second with nine goals. Whitfield recently registered points in three straight games from Dec. 29 - Jan. 2, totaling two goals and two assists. The 12th year pro was signed by Boston as a free agent on July 13, 2009. The native of Alameda, Saskatchewan, was originally selected by the Bruins 100th overall in round four of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Marquardt, 22, returns from Reading, where he was reassigned on December 28, 2009 after beginning the year in Rhode Island. In three games for the Royals, the second year pro tallied one assist. He has seven helpers in 27 games for Providence.

As a rookie last season, Marquardt suited up for 71 regular season games for Providence, recording nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points. The forward added one goal and one assist in nine postseason outings after missing 11 straight games in April due to injury. Prior to turning pro, Marquardt enjoyed four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Moncton Wildcats and Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Overall, the North Bay, Ontario native posted 178 points (107g, 71a) in 235 junior games between the regular season and playoffs. Marquardt was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets 194th overall in round seven of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft before later being traded to Boston for defenseman Jonathan Sigalet on May 27, 2008.

Providence is next in action tonight hosting the Adirondack Phantoms at 7:05 p.m. for Jeff Penner Poster Night. The P-Bruins travel to face the Worcester Sharks on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. before returning home to welcome the Hartford Wolf Pack into town for a 4:05 p.m. Sunday start.
