Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - Drew Larman broke a 1-1 tie 31 seconds into the third period as the Providence Bruins beat the Adirondack Phantoms 3-1 Friday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Phantoms starting goalie John Grahame won the 1999 Calder Cup as a member of the Bruins in his second year as a pro, but had not played in this building in almost nine years. Grahame had to be on his toes early in the game as Providence opened the game with lots of energy and out-shot the Phantoms 6-1 over the first eight minutes of play. At the midway point of the frame Lane MacDermid tipped a shot from Andy Wozniewski up over the blocker of Grahame for his first career professional goal at 9:57. Adirondack closed the gap in shots on goal with the first power play of the game when Providence was called for too-many men on the ice at 16:44, but the Phantoms could not crack the armor of Bruin goalie Dany Sabourin.
It did not take long for the Phantoms to respond in the second period. Captain Jared Ross made a crafty centering pass from the right corner to setup Jason Ward in the high slot and Ward blistered a one-timer off the under-side of the crossbar and in for his sixth goal of the year at 1:52, assisted by Ross and David Sloane; for Sloane it was his first career AHL point. Adirondack carried the play over the next few minutes, but lost their momentum when they took three consecutive penalties and wound up killing off three Providence power plays. Grahame continued his strong play, shrugging off a mid-period collision in his crease that left him shaken up to make 18 saves in the frame.
It took Providence a mere 31 seconds into the third period as Drew Larman scored to put the Bruins into the lead 2-1, assisted by Weller and Wozniewski. The Phantoms pressured the entire period trying to find an equalizing goal, but could not get a second puck beyond Sabourin, who had to be very sharp to stave off the Adirondack attack. Grahame was pulled for the extra attacker with one minute left in the game, but the Bruins would ice the contest with an empty net goal from Jeff LoVecchio at 19:27.
Dany Sabourin recorded his 16th win of the season by stopping 30-of-31 shot to help Providence improve to 19-19-1-0 on the year. John Grahame had another solid night in goal, making 37 saves on 39 shots, but the Phantoms dropped to 17-17-2-0. The Bruins out-shot Adirondack 40-31 in the game and went 0-for-3 on the power play; the Phantoms were 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.
Adirondack now heads home to face the Portland Pirates on Saturday, January 9th at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center. Saturday's game is Phantoms Team Poster Giveaway Night; the first 2,500 fans into the building will receive a free Phantoms Team Poster and there is a post-game autograph session with the entire team in Heritage Hall.
