Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - The Peoria Rivermen went 4-for-6 on the power-play to earn Rick Wamsley his first win as head coach. The 5-1 victory came at the expense of the Toronto Marlies at Carver Arena on Friday night. It was the first time the Rivermen have scored four power-play goals in the same game since Dec. 26, 2006 when they went 4-for-9 against Grand Rapids.
Peoria was a perfect 2-for-2 in the first period and led the Marlies 2-1 at the first intermission. Nicholas Drazenovic picked up his own rebound, after he deflected a shot by Jonas Junland, and pushed it back behind Adam Munro at 10:15. Kyle Rogers tied the game with a power-play goal of his own at 13:54 with a deflection. Barry Tallackson scored for the 12th time with just 1:18 remaining in the first to give the Rivermen the lead. Drazenovic and Eller both assisted on Tallackson's one-timer and all three players finished with a two-point night.
The second period belonged to Peoria but it took almost the entire frame to score a goal. They outshot the Marlies 12-4 in the middle period but scored the only goal with just 4.9 seconds remaining. Bryce Lampman setup Steve Wagner for a one-timer from just inside the blue line. His shot sailed under the bar for just his second goal of the year.
Hannu Toivonen stole the show in the third period with 18 of his 29 saves occurring in the final period. With the game still 3-1, Toivonen made a number of impressive saves to keep the Rivermen ahead by two. With time running down, Toronto pulled Munro for the extra attacker and promptly gave up a goal to Pascal Pelletier at 18:58.
Jay Rosehill tried to drop the gloves with Tyson Strachan in the final minute but when Strachan declined, Rosehill was whistled for a roughing minor and a 10-minute misconduct. On their sixth power play of the game, it was Strachan rifling a shot home just five seconds into the man advantage.
The Rivermen head on the road on Saturday to meet the Chicago Wolves at 7 p.m. Peoria is 0-2-1 against the Wolves and have already played them twice in their last three games. The game can be heard live on Hippie 101.1 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
