DAYTON, OH - Right fielder Alfredo Silverio drove in the game-tying run in the eighth inning and the go-ahead run in the ninth, and Kyle Smit, Thomas Melgarejo and Miguel Ramirez combined to retire the final 18 batters they faced, in the Loons' 5-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons Friday night. The game was played before a crowd of 9,111 at Fifth Third Field.

The Loons snapped a three-game losing streak and are now 6-2 against the division's top team.

Smit hurled a career-high seven innings and retired the final 12 batters he faced, but did not factor in the decision. Thomas Melgarejo (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning to notch his first win. Miguel Ramirez retired all three batters he faced to record his eighth save, tops in the Midwest League. The trio limited the Dragons to just two hits.

The Loons scored first on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Lambo. The Dragons responded with a solo home run by Logan Parker to tie the game. Parker has hit all three of his homers this season and has recorded all seven of his RBIs in the 2008 season in games against the Loons.

Dayton then struck for two unearned runs in the third, following an error by shortstop Justin Fuller.

In the fourth Alex Garabedian drove in Brian Mathews, who had doubled, to pull the Loons to within one run.

The game remained 3-2 until the eighth, when Silverio led off the inning with his first home run of the season. The shot to right-center came several pitches after Silverio hammered a drive just foul but home run distance down the left field line.

Then with the game tied and one out in the ninth, Erik Kanaby doubled into right-center. A bunt single by Jovanny Rosario but runners at first and third for Silverio, whose sacrifice fly gave the Loons' a one-run lead. Lambo added an insurance run with a single to left scoring Rosario.

Silverio and Lambo finished the game with two RBIs each. Rosario had three of the Loons' 12 hits in the game.

"We came out and swung the bat really well today and came out aggressive," said Loons manager Juan Bustabad. "We needed a big start by Smit and he gave us seven big innings."

The Loons and Dragons play a day/night doubleheader Saturday, with game times of noon and 7pm. Steven Johnson (4-1) starts for the Loons in Game 1 against hard-throwing right-hander Josh Ravin, making his first start of the season. In Game 2, Victor Garate (1-0) makes his first start for the Loons. He will be opposed by righty Curtis Partch (2-4). Both games will be carried on the flagship home of the Loons, ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com.
