June 30, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
The New York Mets have announced the promotion of Binghamton Mets infielder Chase Lambin to Triple-A Norfolk and infielders Brett Harper and Corey Ragsdale from High-A St. Lucie to Binghamton. B-Mets pitcher Kevin Deaton has also been placed on the disabled list.
Lambin left the B-Mets with a bang, going 2 for 4 with a home run and RBI double in Binghamton's 10-6 win Wednesday vs. New Britain at NYSEG Stadium. The switch hitter departs with a .331 average (3rd in the Eastern League), 14 home runs, 29 RBI and a .657 slugging percentage (2nd). Lambin, who never hit better than .289 or more than 10 home runs in any of his previous three seasons, played six games with Norfolk earlier this month, hitting .421. The Mets' 34th-round pick in 2002 out of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, the Houston native was in his second season with Binghamton and proved to be one of the more versatile players on the ballclub, playing 31 games at third base, eight at shortstop, two at second base and four in leftfield.
Harper is no stranger to Binghamton, having hit .247 with seven home runs and 26 RBI in 45 games with the B-Mets in 2004. The first baseman hit .280 with 20 home runs, second-most in the Florida State League, and an FSL-leading 60 RBI in 62 games with St. Lucie before his call-up. Earlier this month, the Scottsdale, AZ native played in the FSL All-Star Game for the second straight year. The son of former Major League catcher Brian Harper, Brett is in his fifth pro season after being drafted by the Mets in the 45th round out of Scottsdale (AZ) Community College in 2000.
Ragsdale will be playing for at the Double-A level for the first time after spending most of the last two seasons with St. Lucie, although he did get into six games with Norfolk at the end of 2004. This season, the shortstop hit .260 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI in 68 games with St. Lucie, departing in a tie for the FSL lead in with 8 triples and tied for third with 51 runs scored. Prior to this season, the Jonesboro, AR native had never hit better than .219 over a full season. Ragsdale is in his fifth pro season after being picked by the Mets in the second round of the 2001 draft.
Deaton left his last start Sunday vs. Erie with a shoulder injury and was already scratched from his next scheduled start Saturday at Akron before he was placed on the disabled list today. The Merritt Island, FL native is 3-4 with a 4.19 ERA in 11 games, 10 of them starts, in his first season in a B-Mets uniform. The fifth-year pro spent time on the DL May 13th-June 5th with a lower back strain. No timetable has been set for Deaton's return. The righthander was originally signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in June 2000.
Both Harper and Ragsdale are expected to be in uniform for tonight's B-Mets game at NYSEG Stadium against the New Britain Rock Cats, the finale of a six-game homestand. Binghamton hits the road for three at the Akron Aeros over the weekend before returning home to start a four-game set with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Independence Day, the B-Mets' last homestand before the Eastern League All-Star Break.
