Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - The Redbirds had plenty of opportunities but couldn't come up with the big hit and were shutout, 2-0 by New Orleans at AutoZone Park on Sunday.

Memphis had runners in scoring position with less than two outs in five innings, but the ‘Birds managed just five hits on the afternoon. Five New Orleans pitchers combined on the shutout as reliever Andrew Good (1-5) picked up his first win of the year.

Memphis starter Travis Smith (1-1) turned in another strong performance for the Redbirds. Smith, making his first start for the Redbirds at AutoZone Park since 2002, worked eight innings and tallied six strikeouts and no walks. He allowed just five hits, two in the form of solo home runs.

New Orleans catcher Wiki Gonzalez took Smith deep in the fifth inning to give New Orleans a 1-0 lead. Left fielder Tyrell Godwin added an insurance run with a homer to right in the eighth to make it a 2-0 advantage for the Zephyrs.

Travis Hanson walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth for Memphis and John Nelson followed with a single to right. However, New Orleans closer Roy Corcoran struck out pinch hitter Kevin Estrada, Skip Schumaker flew out to right and Junior Spivey fanned to end the game. Memphis left 11 runners on base in the game.

The ‘Birds and Zephyrs will square off again on Monday with Redbirds ace Anthony Reyes (2-1, 3.10) set to face Major League veteran Pedro Astacio (0-1, 6.75) who is on a rehab assignment with New Orleans. First pitch is slated for 7:10 CST.
