Portland Beavers News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - Scott Hairston was 2-for-4 and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Tucson Sidewinders defeated to the Portland Beavers 3-2 Sunday evening at Tucson Electric Park.
The loss extended the Beavers' season-long road-losing streak to four games and gave the Sidewinders, the first-place team in the South Division, a 2-0 lead in the current series.
The Sidewinders, who twice erased one-run deficits, managed to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Alberto Callaspo doubled with one out, and Tucson put runners on first and third with two outs after Stephen Drew walked. Hairston then lined a single into center to chase starter Tim Stauffer and give the Sidewinders (33-25) the lead.
Bobby Hill had a single, a double and scored both of Portland's runs. Terrmel Sledge was 3-for-4 with an RBI double that gave the Beavers (30-26) their second lead of the game in the fifth.
Stauffer turned in another quality start, giving up three runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings, but fell to 3-5 with the defeat.
Tucson's Randy Choate (3-0) spelled starter Edgar Gonzalez, who yielded two runs on eight hits while striking out seven, in the seventh to grab the win with a scoreless inning.
Greg Aquino was sharp in his two innings of work to close out the game and get his first save.
The three Tucson pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters.
The Beavers went up 1-0 in the first inning. Hill, the leadoff batter who had three hits and a walk in Saturday's loss to Tucson, reached in his sixth consecutive plate appearance with a single to center. Hill moved to second on a single by Sledge and scored on an RBI single by Paul McAnulty, who has hit in eight straight games with Portland.
After Drew singled and scored on a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth, the Beavers broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth as Hill and Sledge hit back-to-back doubles.
The Sidewinders again tied the game in the bottom of the fifth by loading the bases off Stauffer and settling for one run when Juan Brito scored from third on a sacrifice fly to left field by Drew.
The Beavers and Sidewinders meet again at Tucson Electric Park Monday night at 7 p.m.
