Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders maintained first place in the Pacific Southern Division with the team's second consecutive win over the Portland Beavers. Tucson just edged Portland by a final of 3-2, thanks to solid bullpen work and situational hitting. Two of the Tucson runs came off of sac flies and the eventual winning run was on a bloop single off the bat of LF Scott Hairston.
The Beavers got on the board in the first inning. 2B Bobby Hill singled to right-center to start the game and he scored two batters later on a 3B Paul McAnulty single to left.
The Sidewinders tied the game in the fourth. SS Stephen Drew led the inning off with a single to first base. LF Scott Hairston singled to put runners on first and second and then the runners moved up to second and third on a 1B Chris Carter fly out. 3B Brian Barden knocked a run in with a sac fly to right to make the score 1-1.
Portland regained the lead in the top of the fifth on the strength of back-to-back doubles. Bobby Hill came home on McAnulty's second RBI hit of the evening to make the score 2-1.
The game was tied up again in the bottom half of the fifth when Tucson put another run on the board. C Juan Brito singled to right-center and moved to second on a RHP Edgar Gonzalez walk. Brito went to third on a fielder's choice and scored when Drew hit a sac fly to left.
Tucson starter, Gonzalez, left the game after the sixth. In six innings, he allowed two runs, both earned, on eight hits and a walk. He struck out seven batters and tossed one wild pitch. He did not figure in the decision.
In the Seventh inning, Tucson took the lead. 2B Alberto Callaspo doubled and moved to third on a CF Chris Young ground out. Two batters later, Hairston blooped a broken-bat single to short left-center to score Callaspo and give Tucson the 3-2 lead.
Tucson's bullpen held Portland scoreless for the rest of the game. In three innings of work, the pen did not allow a hit and the only baserunner reached on a walk. LHP Randy Choate, who picked up the victory, went one scoreless inning with two strikeouts. RHP Greg Aquino worked two scoreless innings allowing a walk but striking out three on his way to picking up the save.
